Green 101 Integration Series -- Session 1: Passive Design 101

CES LUs 1.5; HSW 1.5; SD 1.5

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM WEDNESDAY, MAY 26

Where: At The Center

Energy from building operations contributes to 40% of national carbon emissions. Better communication between architects and engineers translates directly to better building system performance. In these times of high energy efficiency and greenhouse gas reduction goals, it is even more critical for every member of the design team to understand the role other professionals play to support a more integrated design process.

The ASHRAE NY Chapter and AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) 101 Integration Series bring together architects and engineers to promote a deeper understanding of processes and systems in order to design higher performance buildings. Each 101 Session will consist of presentations by specialists in the session topic, followed by an informal question and discussion period where no question is too simple to ask. Although primarily intended for an architectural audience, the material is suitable for all disciplines seeking a clearer understanding of process, strategies and integration throughout the design and construction process.

Session 1 of 5: Passive Design 101
Passive design of a building structure is the most energy efficient method for managing the interior temperatures of a space. A design professional reviews the natural environment surrounding a facility and models a building to take advantage of certain elements while minimizing negative impact on other aspects. Proper integration of climatic conditions, the zoning of spaces, overall massing of a project, orientation of openings / glass façades all contribute to passive design. This series will review how to approach a project using integrated design to maximize free heating and cooling of a building.

MODERATOR
Martin Finio, Christoff:Finio architecture, Yale University School of Architecture
Mr. Finio is a founding partner at Christoff: Finio Architecture, a design firm in New York. The firm was featured as one of 2004’s Design Vanguard by Architectural Record and as one of the Architectural League’s Emerging Voices of 2005. Their work has been recognized with awards at both the local and national level. He is a studio critic at Yale, where he is also coordinator of the core-curriculum course entitled Systems Integration.
