buildingSmart in Architecture
CES LUs 1.5; HSW 1.5When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM TUESDAY, JULY 13
Where: At The Center
Speaker: James Vandezande, AIA - HOK New York
All tectonic shifts in business begin with vision and enthusiasm and then must mature into practical business models if they are to fulfill their promise. While building information modeling (BIM) and integrated project delivery (IPD) are just starting to achieve increased adoption, now is the time to channel energy into workflow solutions that fill or create marketplace needs – whether they are previously known or newly discovered. The time is always right to maintain vision and become the creators of a new professional world and not spectators to its evolution.
This talk will explore the reinvention of the architectural process we refer to as HOK buildingSMART. You will learn through specific project examples how a large organization began by completely transitioning from CAD to BIM and is now applying new techniques and technology to the entire business process – from capturing client requirements to performance-based design to facilities management.
James Vandezande is a registered architect and a senior associate at HOK in New York City, where he is a member of the firm-wide BIM leadership and is managing their buildingSMART initiatives. Prior to joining HOK, he spent 10 years at SOM transforming architectural skills into a uniquely positioned digital design manager. In this capacity, he pioneered the implementation of BIM on such projects as One World Trade Center, a.k.a. Freedom Tower. James has lectured at many industry events, including Autodesk University, VisMasters Conference, CMAA BIM Conference, McGraw-Hill Construction, and the AIANYS Convention. He is a co-founder and president of the NYC Revit Users Group and is an adjunct lecturing professor at the NYU School for Continuing and Professional Studies as well as the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. James is also a co-author of the upcoming book Mastering Autodesk Revit Architecture 2011 (Wiley, 2010).
