Charter Schools: Partnerships for Innovation?

AIA CES LUs 1.5; HSW 1.5; SD 1.5

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MONDAY, JUNE 13

Where: At The Center

The recent movement towards Charter Schools as an adjunct to Public Schools has given rise to new partnerships geared towards the design and implementation of these facilities. This presentation of three recent projects / case studies seeks to illuminate some of the issues, including: How are these projects financed? How are the project teams structured? How does the educational philosophy of each school get reflected? Who are the decision makers? Are there more or less design standards, and where are the opportunities for design freedom? How do these projects get procured and built?

Each of the projects teams will describe the particular solutions through the lens of these, and other design issues. Peter Gluck and Partners will show their Bronx Preparatory Charter School designed around the idea to create a building for (future) curriculums which still need to be developed. Roger Marvel Architects will present Endeavor Charter School project – a successful conversion of a 1920s concrete factory building into contemporary educational facility, creating a new school identity in a former industrial neighborhood. Gensler / Robert A. M. Stern Architects will show how to utilize interior space in the most effective way: 2 schools in 1 building; shared vs. intimate space, making every part of the building a “learning corner.”
