BICYCLE DIARIES

The bicycle is the world’s most commonly used form of transportation. Since the early 1980s, David Byrne, co-founder of the Talking Heads, has been riding one as his primary means of getting around in New York City and on tour overseas. This point of view from the seat of a bike—faster than a walk, slower than a train, often slightly higher than a person—has become his panoramic window on urban life over the last thirty years.

Bicycle Diaries chronicles Byrne’s observations and insights as he pedals through and engages with some of the world’s major cities. As Byrne cycles through such metropolises as Berlin, Buenos Aires, Istanbul, San Francisco, Manila, and his hometown of Baltimore, he sees economics revealed in shop fronts and history in door frames. With a highly personal mixture of humor and curiosity, he records his thoughts on globalization, world music, urban planning, fashion, policy, architecture, cultural dislocation, and much more. Byrne explains why efforts to increase bicycle use may solve some of the world’s pressing transportation and energy concerns, and in an appendix, offers tips on bike security, rider safety, and clothing and listings of bicycle activist organizations across the country. Bicycle Diaries is an eye-opening celebration of seeing the world at bike level from one of the most original artists on the scene today.

JANETTE SADIK-KHAN has served as the Commissioner of the NYC Department of Transportation since her appointment by Mayor Bloomberg in 2007. Internationally recognized for her expertise in transportation issues, public policy development and innovative finance, Commissioner Sadik-Khan oversees the agency responsible for the City's 6,000 miles of streets and highways, nearly 800 bridges, 1.3 million street signs, 300,000 streetlights and more than 12,000 signalized intersections, as well as the Staten Island Ferry. Her strategic planning emphasizes safety and improved mobility as DOT works to better balance the City’s transportation network and improve the look and feel of its streets.

DAVID BYRNE is a musician, visual artist and filmmaker. A co-founder of the musical group Talking Heads, he has also released several solo albums, most recently “Here Lies Love,” a collaboration with Fatboy Slim about the life of Imelda Marcos. He has garnered an Academy Award for his score to Bernardo Bertolucci’s film The Last Emperor. His art includes photography and installation works, and has been published in five books, most recently Arboretum. Byrne was recently commissioned by the New York City Department of Transportation to design artistic bicycle racks for the city which were installed last August.
