This program was developed in cooperation with Architecture 2030 and Seattle AIA+2030 . Its intent is to provide a regionalized continuing education program relevant to practicing architects in the New York area that is focused on practical ways to achieve the goals of energy and emission reductions in buildings in support of PlaNYC and the 2030 Challenge adopted by the AIA and other organizations. PlaNYC is an unprecedented effort to advance the goal of 30% reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in New York City by 2017, while the 2030 Challenge is promulgated by Architecture 2030 to dramatically reduce global building sector energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2030.
Program Format: Five (5) sequential half- day learning modules with four (4) contact hours each totaling 20 continuing education hours of HSW|SD credit . You must sign up for all five sessions to register. A laptop is required. Previous energy modeling experience is not required.
Module Topics: The overall program will follow a logical sequence for the design of a new or renovated building in the New York metropolitan area. This sequence is based on an overall “5 Step Process” based on principles contained in the AIA 50>>50 program.
1.Education and understanding of energy and emission reduction for owners, the public, and the project team
2.Energy efficiency through Site Design
3.Designing a high performing Building Envelope
4.Integrating renewable energy systems into buildings
5.Optimizing traditional building systems (HVAC, electric, plumbing)
Module Format: Each 4 hour learning module will focus on a specific design step as listed above using 3 distinct learning approaches in each module as follows:
1.Presentation on principles: (1- 1 ½ hours) Using readily available resources a written and graphic presentation will be provided on the fundamental or underlying principles related to the module topic. Power Point presentations with an opportunity for dialog and questions will be used. Cross references and reviews related to other modules will be made as appropriate.
2.Case studies: ( ½ – ¾ hours) AIA NY members have submitted local case study examples of projects that demonstrate the principles of the module topic. It is intended that each topic will include a minimum of 2 case studies with a range of building types and sizes.
3. Application exercise: (1 ½ - 2 hours) Participants will be asked to break out into working groups and be given an exercise to work on that allows them to apply the principles learned above. All application exercises will be based on using participant’s own laptop computers and free energy modeling software. Each group will report their findings and time will be left for open discussion and dialog before ending the session. YRG Sustainability will provide on site support for energy modeling.
Peter J. Arsenault, FAIA, NCARB, LEED® AP is a registered architect and sustainability consultant located near Syracuse, New York. A 1977 graduate of Syracuse University, his work has focused on principles of energy consciousness, environmental sensibility and sustainable design. His career of over 30 years includes diversified experience in green building design, consulting, and planning for educational, health care, residential communities, and religious institutions. In addition, he has been a sought after speaker and author, presenting at numerous state, regional and national seminars and conferences, primarily on the topic of sustainable design and green building practices. He has been published in national and regional journals, magazines, and contributed to books on green and affordable housing. Peter has been active in the American Institute of Architects (AIA) since becoming a member in the 1980’s, recently completing a 3 year term on the National Board of Directors and a 2 year term as National Vice President. He has been an active member of the AIA Community by Design programs serving as Team Leader for multiple Sustainable Design Assessment Teams (SDAT) programs around the country. He is also a past president of the New York State and Central New York Components of the AIA, a member of the US Green Building Council and charter president of a green community advocacy organization known as Greening USA.
Dennis A. Andrejko, FAIA has worked as a teacher and an administrator for nearly 30 years at the University at Buffalo School of Architecture and Planning. His research and teaching focus is on energy-conscious design and sustainability with a special focus in solar design. He attended Arizona State University for his professional studies and received his post-professional training at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 2009, he was elevated to the College of Fellows in the American Institute of Architects for his “steadfast advocacy and inspirational teaching within the academy and profession, central to advancing sustainable futures and underscoring the inextricable relationship between the built and natural environment.” Andrejko is currently serving a two-year term as national vice president of The American Institute of Architects and is Chairman for the Master of Architecture program within the Golisano Institute for Sustainability at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
YR&G is a 19-person consulting firm with offices in Denver, New York and Chicago, consisting of professionals from a wide range of disciplines. YR&G was founded in 2006 in Boulder, CO with the goal of providing technical and strategic sustainability consulting services to support a high level of performance, value, and quality in the built environment and within businesses and organizations. YR&G supports companies, developers, project teams, and facility owners in identifying appropriate sustainability goals, ensuring that green intentions and parameters are carried through, and realizing the benefits. YR&G staff have presented at public trainings, conferences and events all over the world (India, Oman, Dubai, Serbia, etc.) for various groups and individuals. YR&G staff includes LEED Faculty and Professors at Columbia University, Yale and NYU, and YR&G is a USGBC Education Provider and an AIA Continuing Education Provider.
Module # 5 – Friday December 2, 2011 - Building Systems: HVAC, Water, and Electrical
Principles: The presentation will focus on strategies to reduce the amount of non-renewable energy needed to operate systems that heat, cool, and ventilate a building. Water systems will be presented in terms of reducing their energy and environmental impact. Specific strategies to identify and reduce the electrical usage requirements while optimizing lighting strategies for a building will be covered including how to integrate electrical lighting with daylighting systems. Case Studies: 2-4 examples of buildings that are able to reduce the size and energy consumption of their building mechanical and electrical systems will be the focus.
Exercises: Participants will look at energy used by different types of mechanical and electrical systems discussed, compared to baseline and benchmarking standards. Further, the importance of ongoing control and monitoring of these systems will be explored to compare results against the intended performance.
Overall Program Summary: During Module #5 only, time will be provided to summarize the highlights of each workshop session, and reflect on lessons learned and techniques explored in moving toward the goals of PlaNYC and the 2030 Challenge.
