The U.S. Capitol: The Continuing Evolution of an Historic Icon

Please join Alan M. Hantman, FAIA, 10th Architect of the US Capitol for a discussion of the design and construction of the new Capitol Visitor Center, the 9th increment of growth since 1793. His discussion will be placed within the historic context of the Capitol, its grounds, day to day Congressional oversight, and major ongoing security-based project changes. The 580,000sf underground addition increased the size of the Capitol by 70% and was greatly impacted by 9/11.
Mr. Hantman graduated from the City College of New York with a Bachelor of Architecture degree and from the City University of New York Graduate Center with a Masters in Urban Planning. Prior to his appointment as the Architect of the US Capitol he was Vice President for Architecture, Planning, Historic Preservation, and Construction for the Rockefeller Center Management Corporation. He has also served on the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and chaired its Federal Agency Programs Committee.
