About The Harlem Edge | Cultivating Connections:
The Harlem Edge is presented as part of Future Now!, 2012 AIA NY President Joseph J. Aliotta's Presidential Theme. The Harlem Edge competition site, located on West 135th Street in the Hudson River, explored the redevelopment of the decommissioned marine transfer station into a community facility. Emerging professionals with less than ten years of experience, including university level students, had the opportunity to creatively consider the possibilities for a multi-modal transit hub and a food and nutrition education facility for Nourishing USA.
By connecting the West Harlem neighborhood to the Hudson River, access to the waterfront could serve as an engine for new kinds of local economic development. The Marine Transfer Station site provided opportunities to investigate urban agriculture/aquaculture in a waterfront location with the operational program of the community organization. The proposed site and program, posed a range of challenges to consider, including community networks, waterfront strategies, and health initiatives.
The Harlem Edge | Cultivating Connections will be on view at The Center for Architecture from July 12 - October 31, 2012
