The Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (BQE), proposed by the Regional Plan Association in the 1930s, and completed by Robert Moses in 1964, offers a mixed legacy to the neighborhoods it bisects. Through a participatory process, “Under the BQE,” a project of Architecture for Humanity New York, working with neighborhood partner Myrtle Avenue Revitalization Project, seeks to address neglected pedestrian and traffic safety conditions below the elevated BQE along a 17-block corridor of Park Avenue in Brooklyn. Project coordinators Elisa Holland and Shan Jayakumar will share the results of the team’s efforts in a discussion about neighborhood outreach, community-oriented design, street planning, and pro bono design services. They will be joined by a panel of community organizations with experience in grassroots environmental and infrastructure advocacy.
