On May 27, Citi Bike -- the nation's biggest bicycle-sharing program -- got rolling. Thousands of New Yorkers got their first chance to ride a network billed as a new form of public transit in a city known for it. How is such a large undertaking possible?
Practitioners, academics, policy makers, and advocates from around the globe with diverse backgrounds including urban design, planning, transportation, engineering, landscape architecture, and public policy will explore the ways that cities can best encourage and accommodate bicycle travel in the future. They will discuss the future of bicycle-friendly cities, the integrating bicycling into urban planning and design, the effects of bike use on health and environment, the policies for developing bicycle infrastructure, and safety programs.
Peter Murray, Hon. FRIBA, FRSA, Chairman, New London Architecture: NLA. From April to July 2013, British architect, journalist, and cyclist Peter Murray and a team of British riders are cycling from Portland, Oregon, to Portland Place in London - studying how cities are coping with the increasing interest in the bicycle as a credible form of urban transport.
