Paulo Werneck: Brazilian Muralist
AIA CES: 1.5 LU
When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 19
Where: At The Center
Brazilian muralist Paulo Werneck created mosaic murals that adorned Modernist buildings from the 1940s well into the 1970s. Collaborating with the foremost Brazilian architects, Werneck created abstract and geometric patterns that blend innovation and harmony. His best known works are the murals he designed for Oscar Niemeyer's landmark Pampulha Church. Combining an artist's vision with a craftsman's skill, Werneck's work is considered among the finest of his groundbreaking generation.
Werneck's grandson, Gaspar Saldanha is a New York based designer who will lecture on Werneck's studio and how he is continuing his grandfather's design legacy. Saldanha is working with leading architects and luxury manufacturers on adaptations of the renowned murals in current architecture and furniture design projects. Saldanha is also reinterpreting the artist's archives into a line of home decor.
