European Cities: Memory and Public Space

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM THURSDAY, MAY 15

Where: At The Center

Join us for a film screening of Europe City and a short film about the Memorial to the Abolition of Slavery in Nantes. Coproduced by the CCCB and RTVE (Spanish public television) and written and directed by David Bravo and Judit Carrera, Europe City questions whether there is still such a thing as a European city. Europe has traditionally been characterized as having compact, densely-populated cities organized around complex uses and a mixture of populations. What remains of the European model of the city? The film highlights winning projects from the European Prize for Urban Public Space, featured in the exhibition Polis: 7 Lessons from the European Prize for Urban Public Space [2000-2012].

The screening will be followed by a conversation with Julian Bonder, Partner, Wodiczko + Bonder, Sophie Pennetier, Project Engineer at SHoP Construction, and Mary Ann Newman, Co-Director of the Farragut Fund for Catalan Culture in the U.S., who will explore the concept of a European idea of the city and discuss the role of monuments in strengthening public memory.
