Affording Resilience: Housing Retrofits for Climate Threats Panel

AIA CES: 1.5 LU | HSW

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM TUESDAY, JULY 15

Where: At The Center

What does Post-Sandy resiliency mean for towers in the park? For elevator tenements? For walk-up tenements?

What can be done now? What needs regulatory change? What makes financial sense?

Three-quarters of the residential units in New York City's high-risk flood zones are in multifamily buildings and many of them are either rent stabilized or government subsidized housing. These buildings face a range of challenges in implementing resilience measures because of their physical characteristics and the regulatory framework in which they operate.

Building on the work completed by the AIANY Post-Sandy Initiative Housing Taskforce, the NYU Furman Center, with AIANY and Enterprise Community Partners, looked at three specific multifamily affordable housing buildings. Through a charrette involving architects, engineers, and code experts, the team developed creative designs and potential policies for resiliency retrofits, including responses to regulatory and financial barriers faced by affordable housing.

This event panel will be presented in conjunction with the Affording Resilience: Housing Retrofits for Climate Threats at the Center for Architecture, on view from June 24 - August 7, and the related report by NYU Furman Center to be released on July 15.
