AIANY Freshkills Park Boat Tour
AIA CES: 2.5 LU | HSW
When: 9:30 AM - 12:45 PM SUNDAY, JULY 17
Where: AIANY Tours
This extended AIANY Boat Tour will travel, aboard Classic Harbor Line’s elegant Yacht Manhattan, to Staten Island to offer a limited "backstage pass" to see the transformation of the region's former largest garbage landfill into Freshkills Park. The cruise will enter a network of tidal kills (or streams) to explore the unprecedented land reclamation project, nearly three times the size of Central Park. NYC PARKS and AIANY guides will provide insightful narration about cutting-edge landscape architecture and engineering, urban planning as well as the industrial architecture and infrastructure of Staten Island's North West shore.
Eloise Hirsh, Administrator of the Freshkills Park and President of the Freshkills Park Alliance will speak about the complex systems that enable the former landfill to be transformed into a park. Land reclamation engineering, methane gas capture for energy use, phased site access will be explored in depth. Hirsh was the former Director of City Planning for the City of Pittsburgh and has a background in open space preservation and urban development.
Arthur Platt, AIA, an architect and co-chair of the AIANY Architecture Tour Committee, will share a discussion of waterfront planning themes with the featured guide and also contribute insights on dozens of architecture and infrastructure sites encountered during the approach to and return from Freshkills Park.
