Confluence: Artists Share Stories of Water and Change
AIA CES: 2.5 LU | 2.5 HSW
When: 1:30 PM - 4:45 PM SUNDAY, ARCHTOBER 9
Where: AIANY Tours
Classic Harbor Line
Chelsea Pier 62
This extended AIANY boat tour will travel to Staten Island aboard Classic Harbor Line’s elegant yacht Manhattan 2 and offer a backstage pass to the transformation of the region's largest garbage landfill into Freshkills Park. The cruise will also share first-hand accounts by artists whose work relates to NYC's waterfront sites and issues. Once at Freshkills Park, the tour enters a network of tidal kills, or streams, to explore the unprecedented land reclamation project that is nearly three times the size of Central Park. NYC Parks, AIANY guides, and artists will provide insightful commentary about cutting-edge landscape architecture, engineering, urban planning and public art.
“Confluence” is a series of programs and events that convenes artists, designers, members of the public, and the regional boating community around environmental issues and the interior creeks of Freshkills Park, the developing landfill-to-park project on the west shore of Staten Island. On October 9, Mariel Villere of the Freshkills Park team and artist/organizer Dylan Gauthier have invited speakers to overlay their stories of water and change on this Classic Harbor Line cruise by way of the Kill Van Kull, the Arthur Kill, and the Fresh Kills waterways. Made possible, in part, by funding from the Shelley and Donald Rubin Foundation.
Featured Artist Guides:
Dylan Gauthier, artist, curator and writer exploring alternative infrastructure narratives
Mary Mattingly, creator of "Swale," a floating food forest now at Brooklyn Bridge Park
Nancy Nowacek, creator of Citizen Bridge, a proposal to connect Brooklyn and Governors Island
Lize Mogel, interdisciplinary artist and cartographer, focusing on waste and sludge
Mariel Villere, Programs and Grants Manager, Freshkills Park
Arthur Platt, AIA, Architect; Co-chair of the AIANY Architecture Tour Committee, will discuss waterfront planning themes with featured guides and will also contribute insights on dozens of architecture and infrastructure sites encountered during the approach to and return from Freshkills Park.
