Oculus Book Talk: Dark Space: Architecture, Representation, Black Identity

AIA CES: 1.5 LU | HSW

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MONDAY, JULY 11

Where: At The Center

Join us at the Center for Architecture on July 11 as Mario Gooden discusses his book Dark Space: Architecture, Representation, Black Identity.

This collection of essays by Gooden investigates the construction of African American identity and representation through the medium of architecture. These five texts move between history, theory, and criticism to explore a discourse of critical spatial practice engaged in the constant reshaping of the African Diaspora.

Presented here is a series of questions that interrogate and illuminate other narratives of "African American architecture" and reveal compelling ways of translating the philosophical idea of the African Diaspora's experience into space. The essay “Space as Praxis as Identity” explores the location of identity within the spatial praxes of avant-gardist art and architectural practices and reinforces Gooden’s argument that liberation is a spatial practice.

Following his presentation, Gooden will be joined by Joel Sanders to discuss the overarching themes of Dark Space.

Speakers:
Mario Gooden, Principal, Huff + Gooden Architects; Professor of Practice, Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture, Planning, and Preservation
Joel Sanders, Professor of Architecture, Yale University
