Building of the Day: Naval Cemetery Landscape

When: 12:00 PM - 12:00 PM TUESDAY, ARCHTOBER 10

Where: AIANY Tours

140 Essex St, New York, NY 10002

Today, the Naval Cemetery Landscape provides a place for retreat and remembrance. In previous centuries the 1.7 acre site was used as an unmarked burial ground serving the Brooklyn Naval Hospital. Decommissioned in the 1920s, the Naval Cemetery Landscape is now the first park along the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway. The gatehouse provides the threshold to a memorial meadow and sacred grove framed by an undulating boardwalk lifted above a warm season grass and wildflower meadow. Image: Max Touhey.
