The South Bronx Greenway: Revitalization of an Urban Waterfront

AIA CES: 1.5 LUs | 1.5 HSW | 1.5 SD

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MONDAY, APRIL 30

Where: At The Center

Born of an unprecedented community-initiated and successful $1.25M Fed DOT planning grant proposal at the turn of the century, NYC responded in 2003 with a Mayoral report promoting a sustainable community in Hunts Point, Mathews Nielsen Landscape Architects’ three-phase South Bronx Greenway Master Plan was completed in 2006 with the NYC Economic Development Corporation and two local community-based partners. As a twenty-project endeavor, it incorporates techniques of green infrastructure, complete streets, and environmental remediation to ultimately revive the area’s waterfront and provide some of its first public access to the river. Mathews Nielsen has led the design of six of the master plan’s open space projects in this green-challenged neighborhood, which have been completed or are currently under construction. These projects offer insight into designing and implementing many of New York City’s innovative green initiatives.

Signe Nielsen will comment comprehensively on the planning and urban design aspects of the South Bronx Master Plan, its process, and its implemented projects. Ms. Nielsen spearheaded the original master plan and serves as principal in charge of the design and construction of the resulting open space projects. Laurie Kerr and Margaret Newman will contribute overviews on recent major public infrastructure and transportation policy related to these fields, and Paul Lipson will offer a broad view from the perspectives of community activist, public advocate, and local business entrepreneur in alternative transportation
