Archtober Building of the Day: New-York Historical Society

When: 12:30 PM - 1:30 PM MONDAY, ARCHTOBER 22

Where:170 Central Park West, New York, NY

Founded two hundred years ago, the New-York Historical Society was conceived as a private club for antiquarians. That culture was subsequently embedded in the design of their building on Central Park West, a structure that impeded previous efforts to make the institution more welcoming and accessible to the general public.
As architects for the society since 2005, Platt Byard Dovell White Architects completed a campaign of interior and exterior renovations to change the image, appearance, and accessibility of principal spaces throughout the museum. Work on the thrice-landmarked building included restoring its distinguished facades, widening entrances, combining interior spaces, and completely reconfiguring the auditorium to support expanded programming.
Scott Duenow, AIA, of Platt Byard Dovell White Architects and Lee Skolnick, FAIA, of Lee H. Skolnick Architecture + Design Partnership will lead the tour.
Consider staying for lunch following the tour at the Museum’s restaurant, Caffè Storico.
Cost: free
