Hong Kong at 15 - A Discussion between Curator Jonathan Solomon and Photographer Chan Yiu Hung

AIA CES: 1.5 LUs

When: 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM SATURDAY, JANUARY 12

Where: At The Center

Jonathan Solomon, AIA, Exhibition Curator for Hong Kong at 15: Redefining the Public Realm, and co-author of Cities Without Ground: A Hong Kong Guidebook, will engage in dialogue with Hong Kong based photographer Chan Yiu Hung, whose work is featured in the exhibition.

Jonathan Solomon will present his new book Cities Without Ground: A Hong Kong Guidebook. Hong Kong is a city without ground. This is true both physically (built on steep slopes, the city has no ground plane) and culturally (there is no concept of ground). Density obliterates figure-ground in the city, and in turn re-defines public-private spatial relationships. Perception of distance and time is distorted through compact networks of pedestrian infrastructure, public transport and natural topography in the urban landscape. Without a ground, there can be no figure either. In fact, Hong Kong lacks any of the traditional figure-ground relationships that shape urban space: axis, edge, center, even fabric.

Chan Yiu Hung (Ah Hung) – the distinguished founder of the Hong Kong Cultural Imaging Workshop – will highlight his work as a photographer on the Hong Kong buildings and skyline. His work blends the commercial and the cultural. With projects ranging from promotion of new residential developments to documentation of the historic preservation of heritage buildings, Ah Hung’s photographs expose the complex, and even contradictory character of Hong Kong’s public realm. In a city often described by such contrasts: East and West, traditional and modern, familiar and new, Ah Hung captures buildings that demonstrate synthesis. Where traditional street life meets the skyscraper, where the city meets the jungle, where the historic meets the contemporary, Hong Kong creates its own nuanced urbanism.
