Beyond the Lawn

AIA CES: 1.5 LU | 1.5 HSW

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM THURSDAY, MAY 9

Where: At The Center

A conversation exploring landscape traditions and future trajectories in open space design in housing. The program marks the exhibition of Low Rise High Density, curated by Karen Kubey and designed by The Letter D, examining a housing type celebrated in the 1960s and '70s, and what it means in the United States today.

Architecture and planning historians Marta Gutman and Matthew Lasner, with New York landscape architect Kate Orff, and California architect Michael Pyatok, will discuss how landscape design innovations in housing can change the way we live. Moving from 19th-century Garden Cities to today and highlighting groundbreaking housing designs in New York’s history and from the West, the program will consider potentials for health and sustainability in low-rise, high-density housing and evolutions of the typology over time.

Matthew Lasner, Assistant Professor, Hunter College Urban Affairs and Planning; author, High Life: Condo Living in the Suburban Century
