Hands-On Workshop: Understanding Earthquakes and Seismic Design

Join us for a hands-on workshop in coordination with the Center for Architecture's Exhibition, "Considering the Quake: Seismic Design on the Edge."

When: 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM MONDAY, APRIL 21

Where: At The Center

Join Sissy Nikolaou, with her colleagues of Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers and Tim Hayduk of the Center for Architecture Foundation in a hands-on workshop using the Considering the Quake exhibition.

Participants will have an opportunity to create and test their own building designs on an earthquake shaking table to get a first-hand understanding of how earthquakes affect buildings. Projects featured in the exhibition will illustrate how architects and engineers use innovative technologies to create earthquake-resistant structural systems. Interactive experiments will demonstrate earthquake-related hazards such tsunamis, fault ruptures, and soil liquefaction. Exhibits will display the fascinating world of New York City underground!

Price: $25 / person

Led by: Sissy Nikolaou, PhD, PE Senior Associate Mueser Rutledge Consulting Engineers
Tim Hayduk, CFAF Lead Design Educator

Considering the Quake was originally presented at the Design Exchange in downtown Toronto. At the Center for Architecture in New York, it includes an installation by SOFTLab in consultation with engineers from Arup.

Exhibition Curator:
Dr. Effie Bouras and Professor Ghyslaine McClure, P.Eng, of the McGill University Department of Civil Engineering and Applied Mechanics
Exhibition Designer: SOFTLab and Pentagram

Please note: Continuing Education credits are not offered for this program.
