AIANY Featured Guide Boat Tour - Signe Nielsen, FASLA

When: 5:15 PM - 6:45 PM SUNDAY, JUNE 22

Where: AIANY Tours

Signe Nielsen, FASLA, Partner, Matthews Nielsen Landscape Architects (MNLA), President of the NYC Design Commission, Co-author of NYC’s High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines

MNLA’s award winning, landscapes along the Hudson (in NYC and NJ), the East River, the Harlem River and Bronx waterfront are at the forefront of ecological design and resiliency planning. Signe will join the AIANY Boat Tour to explore many of these projects and discuss strategies for addressing the triple challenge of absorbing storm surge, mitigating sea level rise and filtering upland flood run off. MNLA’s approved design for Pier 42 will become a vital link in the effort to ring Manhattan with public spaces and give Lower East Side neighborhoods access to the East River.

As president of the NYC Arts Commission, founded in 1898, and co-author of NYC’s
High Performance Infrastructure Guidelines, Signe will share insights from her engagement in the city and region’s planning. The estuary’s historically abundant ecology as well as historic infrastructure and engineering sites, both recent and historic, will all be part of a dialogue with AIANY host guide, Arthur Platt AIA, during the 1.5 hr. cruise aboard Classic Harbor Line’s Yacht Manhattan.
